The "Online Fraud Protection Guarantee" protects Cardmembers against fraudulent use of the American Express® Card on the Internet. It's an important service that will make shopping on the Internet a more reassuring and secure experience. Cardmembers will not be held responsible for any unauthorised charges made online, or in the physical world, with their Card so long as they comply with the Card conditions and notify us immediately* when they discover any fraudulent transactions.
*Immediately means as soon as the Cardholder is aware, but no later than on or before the due date of the statement in which the fraudulent transaction appears.
We are promoting the "Online Fraud Protection Guarantee" to our Cardmembers to encourage online shopping. This Cardmember benefit will be communicated in various usage programs to help boost online business for our Merchants.
Improved online statistics and tracking
If you trade both online, and in the conventional "physical world" fashion, we want to help you separate your business statistics. All our Merchants with a dual business presence will need a second Merchant Number. Then we can supply separate reports to help you identify your online and physical world trading volumes.
As a Card provider, we always stand by our Cardmembers if their American Express® Card is used fraudulently - we are formalising this promise as it applies to the online world through our "Online Fraud Protection Guarantee".
The Online Fraud Protection Guarantee applies to cards issued by American Express in selected markets. In some markets, partners (e.g. some local Banks) issue Cards, so Cardmembers will need to refer to the partner for details of their terms and conditions.
Your Merchant Agreement with us contains special terms & conditions which apply to Internet transactions. These special terms can be found in Section II, Clause 8, of the Merchant Agreement.
Yes. All our existing physical world Merchants that wish to accept American Express via the Internet will need a separate Merchant Number for their online business.
If you are an existing Merchant, and require a new Merchant Number for your online business, please contact your local American Express representative.
When you have obtained a separate Merchant Number for your online business, you are automatically eligible to participate in the Online Fraud Protection Guarantee.
As referenced above, displaying the Online Fraud Protection Guarantee logo can bring substantial benefits to merchants. Therefore, we do require that merchants display the Online Fraud Protection Guarantee decal if they accept American Express cards over the Internet.
