How do I Apply?
At American Express, we are passionate about recruiting top quality Graduates who have a passion about what we do and will fit seamlessly into our organisation. We view recruitment as an integral part of the programme as it allows us to find out about your capabilities and more importantly it gives you a realistic chance to find out if we are the right Company for you.
To ensure we get it right, our selection process has been designed to gauge each applicant's skills and experiences.
NOTE: Be advised that all Graduate Programme positions are currently closed. If you are interested in other American Express opportunities Click Here.

1st Review → 2nd Review → Telephone Interview → On Line Testing → Assessment Center → Job Offer
Stage 1 - Apply
You will be asked to complete an online application form and asked to answer questions on experience and leadership.
You will need to allow 2 hours to complete this application fully, however you can save your application throughout
the process and submit when you are ready.
Stage 2 - 1st Review
The graduate recruitment team will review your application to ensure that you meet our basic criteria.
Stage 3 - 2nd Review
All applications for the stream you have applied for will be reviewed in more detail.
Stage 4 - Telephone Interview
If you get through the screening you will be invited to a telephone interview. The interview will be
competency based and it is your opportunity to tell us about yourself and provide recent examples and experiences to date.
You will also be asked about your motivations for the Company, our graduate programme, and the stream you are applying for. The interview will last no longer than 1 hour.
Stage 5 – On Line Testing
If you are successful in the above you will be invited to complete an online ability test. This will take approximately 30 minutes.
Stage 6 – Assessment Centre
The Assessment Centre will be a one day event where candidates will be interviewed and asked to complete several exercises based around business related themes. You will also be required to have knowledge of our business and our competitors.
At the Assessment Centre you will undertake a series of exercises aimed at evaluating your behaviours and knowledge against pre-determined Company competencies which are matched to specific job requirements, business objectives and company culture.
We believe competencies are important for several reasons:
- They identify critical behaviours that lead to successful performance.
- They provide a standardised process for conducting selection interviews.
- They help employees understand what they need to do to succeed in their jobs and careers.
- They are a fairer way of assessing candidates than more traditional styles of interviewing - assessing from evidence given rather than a subjective view.
Throughout each stage we will communicate with you via email.
Questions and Answers:
- Do you have any tips for my application form?
Yes,
- Quality over Quantity.
- Ensure your answers are clear and easily readable.
- Make sure that all the information you include is relevant, if it isn't do not include it.
- Check your spelling. We reject a number of applications each year because people have not taken the time to check their spelling. It demonstrates a lack of attention to detail.
- Find out about American Express, this will ensure you are interested in us and whether you have a passion and an interest in the services we provide.
- Tell us what makes you 'extraordinary'.
- If I am successful to undertake a telephone interview how should I prepare?
- Re-read your application or CV.
- Find out about the Company, you will be asked about why you are applying to American Express.
- We will be asking you two competency questions, (see stage 4 above), make sure you understand what a
Competency question is about, seek advice if not, if you get the opportunity practice with friends or a skill session at your university.
- Can you tell me more about the assessment centres?
- For the assessment event you should expect to be away for 1 day. If necessary, the company will provide overnight accommodation.
- You will be sent an introductory pack in preparation for the assessment centre.
- Prepare for the day, re-read your application or CV.
- At the event you will be assessed against a group of competencies which we believe underpin the success of our employees, and deliver exceptional value to our business.
- Ensure you are yourself, the exercises are not designed to catch you out, we want to see where your skills and strengths are.
- Think about your verbal and non verbal communications.
- Finally, try to relax and enjoy the experience, although this may be easier said than done!
